Greetings from Deirdre Haynes Counseling Services,
We are living in uncertain and unprecedented times. As we brace ourselves to deal with the remains of the Flu season, the incoming Allergy Season, and the possible increase of COVID-19 cases, it is important that we not succumb to panic and irrationality but demonstrate appropriate concern and make preparations.
As a mental health therapist, I take the mental health of my clients very seriously. I also realize that many clients desire the “safe place” that my office provides. I take pleasure in providing that safe environment. However, I have struggled with a tough decision based on the global crisis that is upon us. Do I continue to see clients in-office with fingers crossed that neither I nor my client has come into contact with a virus or do I move to an online presence with the hope that the move will at least reduce possible transmission of any illnesses between myself and my clients?
When I began to consider my life outside of the office and the very close family members whom I love dearly that have weakened immune systems due to disease or decreased lung capacity, I knew that a decision had to be made.
So, beginning March 16, 2020, I will be conducting phone and video sessions only. This is a temporary move but also an indefinite one. My hope and prayer is that by early April we will be back in the office and back to business as usual.
Now I know that some clients prefer face-to-face sessions and may not like the idea of talking via video or telephone. However, I am asking that you at least try this quite common method of counseling before deciding to discontinue. I have had several clients that were pleasantly surprised at how deep and meaningful our conversations were via telephone or video.
Every effort will be made to ensure that our conversations are confidential and within HIPPA guidelines. I realize that as more and more employees are sent home to work via video or telephone, quiet spaces and confidentiality may become an issue. If this is an issue for you, I advise sitting in your vehicle in order to maintain confidentiality during your session.
If you are new to tele-mental health counseling then I will contact you to ensure that you understand how the session will work and to certify that all documentation needed to conduct the tele-mental health session has been completed.
With that said, I pray that each of you will continue to remain calm so that you are able to process what is happening in our world in a logical manner. At the end of the day, “what will be will be”. We can only take the advice of the CDC to socially distance ourselves temporarily, wash and sanitize our hands, refrain from touching our faces with unwashed hands, and to wear protective masks if you are sick or moving through crowded areas. This is not the time to be the hero. If you are sick, please see a doctor and then rest at home.
We can use this time to become stressed and to panic which makes us even more susceptible to “dis-eases”. Or we can use this time to go within. Within our homes, within our minds, and within our hearts to determine what is really important to us and to plan for our bright future. The choice is always yours!
Hopefully, you will consider joining my newsletter, The SPOT, where I will be discussing relevant issues concerning our current state of affairs and much more. Simply visit either website and complete the pop-up to be added to the list. The link is below:
